What is GalvoKote Cold Galvanizing Compound?
The product supplied here is GalvoKote Cold Galvanizing Compound. It is a single-pack, ready-to-use zinc-rich coating formulated for direct electrical contact with prepared steel. The current GalvoKote specification states 96% metallic zinc by weight in the dry film.

What you are buying
GalvoKote, available in Pakistan with local technical support.
The coating contains zinc powder, binder and aromatic thinner. After application and solvent release, the dried film is overwhelmingly metallic zinc by mass. The recommended coating system uses a total dry-film thickness of 80 µm, normally built in two 40 µm coats.

Electrochemistry
How sacrificial zinc protects iron and steel.
Galvanic protection requires an electrically conductive path. Zinc has a more negative electrode potential than iron, so when both are electrically connected in the presence of an electrolyte, zinc preferentially oxidizes. That is the same electrochemical principle behind conventional galvanizing.
Metal contact is established
The coating must reach clean, bare steel or a suitably prepared galvanized surface. Insulating layers interfere with the galvanic path.
Zinc particles form conductive pathways
High zinc loading helps particles contact one another and the substrate. Research on zinc-rich coatings consistently shows that electrical percolation is central to cathodic protection.
Zinc corrodes preferentially
Where moisture and ionic species create corrosion conditions, zinc acts as the sacrificial material and supplies electrons to connected steel.
Corrosion products add secondary protection
As zinc reacts, zinc-containing corrosion products can progressively fill pores and contribute a barrier effect. This secondary behavior is documented across zinc-rich coating research.
Category clarity
Cold galvanizing, zinc-rich primer and hot-dip galvanizing are related, but they are not interchangeable terms.
Cold galvanizing compounds sit inside the wider zinc-rich coating field. The key point for buyers is to compare actual zinc loading, direct-contact requirements, intended role and validated performance instead of assuming every grey zinc paint is equivalent.
| Feature | GalvoKote cold galvanizing compound | Typical zinc-rich primer | Hot-dip galvanizing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Process | Ambient-applied single-pack coating | Ambient-applied organic or inorganic primer | Steel immersed in molten zinc |
| Protection mechanism | Strongly galvanic / sacrificial with secondary barrier contribution | Can be galvanic, barrier or mixed depending on formulation and zinc connectivity | Sacrificial zinc plus metallurgically bonded zinc/iron alloy layers |
| GalvoKote zinc content | 96% by weight in dry film | Varies by product and specification | Metallic zinc coating, not a paint film |
| Substrate contact | Direct metal contact is essential | Depends on system design, normally first coat on prepared steel | Entire component immersed during factory process |
| Best fit | New and fabricated steel, full protective coating systems, maintenance and galvanized repair | Multi-coat protective paint systems | New components that can be transported and immersed |
