The mechanism
Zinc protects the steel by becoming the sacrificial metal.
The coating is applied directly to properly prepared metal. The dense zinc network in the cured film has to remain electrically connected to the steel. When an electrolyte is present, zinc is the more active metal and preferentially oxidizes, helping keep the steel cathodic while the galvanic pathway remains effective.
