Product guide
Product Overview
GalvoKote is a cold-applied, single-component zinc-rich compound for suitably prepared steel and repair of damaged galvanized areas. The dry film contains 96% zinc by weight. It is suitable for new steel, complete protective coating systems and galvanized repairs. In direct contact with steel, interconnected metallic zinc can provide sacrificial galvanic protection. Proper preparation and film thickness are essential.
Key Technical Specifications
| Property | GalvoKote specification |
|---|
| Product format | Single-component zinc-rich coating; mechanically agitate before and during use. |
| Dry-film zinc | 96% zinc by weight in the dry film. |
| Density | 2.50 ±0.05 kg/L. |
| Recommended build | 80 µm total DFT, normally 40 µm × 2 coats. |
| Coverage | 2 m²/kg at 80 µm; approximately 5 m² per 2.5 kg pack before losses. |
| Application limits | 5-40°C; relative humidity below 85%; substrate clean, dry and free from condensation. |
| Touch dry | Around 30 minutes at defined reference conditions; this is not the recoat interval. |
| Recoat | 1-2 hours when the first coat is dry and sound, subject to temperature, RH and film build. |
| Full cure reference | 24 hours at reference conditions; field drying varies with conditions and film build. |
| Airless spray | Pressure >20 MPa; spray-tip orifice >0.017 in; #50–60 filter as appropriate to equipment. |
Coverage and Material Estimation
At 80 µm total DFT, theoretical consumption is 0.50 kg/m². Theoretical coating mass (kg) = prepared area (m²) × 0.50 kg/m². Packs = ceiling(adjusted mass / 2.5 kg). If loss is expressed as a fraction of purchased material, adjusted mass = theoretical mass / (1 - loss fraction).
Example: 10 m² requires 5.0 kg theoretically, equal to two 2.5 kg packs before losses. With a 20% loss-of-input assumption, 5 / 0.8 = 6.25 kg, so three packs are required.
Recommended Applications
Typical uses include full-coat protection of new structural and fabricated steel, and galvanized repair at welds, cut edges and drilled areas; fabricated steelwork; utility support steel; external plant steel and pipe supports; and project-specific infrastructure maintenance. Do not assume suitability for immersion, aggressive chemical exposure, continuous high temperature, untested topcoats or application over insulating paint.

Surface Preparation
Remove oil, grease, salts, mill scale, rust and unsound coatings. Use ISO 8501-1 Sa 2½ abrasive blasting for specified high-demand bare steel. For galvanized repairs, select an appropriate St 2 or St 3 route according to the actual surface condition. Direct zinc-to-metal contact is required where sacrificial protection is claimed.
Mixing and Application
Zinc settles during storage. Reincorporate all sediment with suitable mechanical agitation and continue agitation during application. Apply approximately 40 µm DFT per coat. For conventional spray use a 1.5-2.0 mm nozzle at approximately 0.3 MPa with a #100 strainer. For airless spray use a tip above 0.017 in and pressure above 20 MPa with a #50-60 gun filter. Never add petrol or kerosene. If thinning is necessary, use xylene only, to a maximum of 10% of the coating quantity. Direct alkyd-based topcoats are not recommended; confirm complete-system compatibility for acrylic and other organic resin-based topcoats. Follow the application guide.
Coating Performance and Test Information
Sacrificial protection depends on continuous metallic zinc contact and controlled application. Laboratory measurements describe performance under defined test conditions and are not forecasts of outdoor service life. GalvoKote provides salt-spray resistance up to 4,032 hours. Performance depends on surface preparation, environmental conditions and achieved film thickness.

What is the recoat interval?
1-2 hours when the first coat is dry and sound, subject to the stated conditions.
Can it be sprayed?
Yes. Use the approved conventional or airless parameters and appropriate safety controls.
Can it repair galvanizing?
Yes, for specified repairs after suitable cleaning and preparation of the actual surface condition.
